There I go again spending endless hours watching and listening to the commentary tracks on those DVD's. Oh the things you can learn.
Sid and Marty Croft the masters of the Saturday morning Kiddie show followed up their success with HR Puffnstuf with another show that only lasted one season and 17 episodes back in 1970. Using the Monkees as a prototype they produced a gloriously psychedlic insect version known as the Bugaloos. With beautiful color backrounds and real British kids who had real accents a couple of whom could actually play and sing, this show may have actually resembled a precoucious LSD trip. And not only that but the later Teletubbies seemed to owe its entire existence to this early series. Bye Bye Tinkie Winkie.
But little did I know until I started watching one of the interviews and commenteries about the Phil Collins connection. I've heard all of the Monkees stories about Steve Stills being turned down because he was starting to go bald. But it seems that Phil Collins had a similar demon. According to one of the Bugaloos cast members Phil auditioned to be one of them and was turned down. Who knows he may have had a career as a prematurely balding Bugaloo. But if that wasn't crazy enough it seems that a few months later Phil joined Genesis. Quite a difference in those bands isn't there. Who knows Rock history may have been changed forever.
But there is still more. Phil Collins mother at that time managed and schooled child actors in the art of show business and actually managed several of the other Bugalloos. If things had been different the lamb may never have lied down on Broadway.
